Dr. Eugene Crystal
Many cardiac patients do have symptoms, which are difficult to catch. Some symptoms may be simple as pain, dizziness, or blackout, and some of the symptoms may be just palpitations, a feeling of regular heartbeat, or fast heartbeats. Dr. Heather J. Ross
The very first heart transplant I witnessed, I was looking into an empty chest cavity, and they were sewing the new heart in, and everyone was of course nervous and wondering ‘is it gonna start?’ Well, it did start, and I remember thinking, MY God it couldn’t be better than this, to see something so miraculous and be able to do this every day that was the moment I realized what a powerful opportunity was in front of me.”
Dr. Heather Ross is an outstanding physician and human being, she goes above and beyond for her patients. She made the news for conquering Mount Vinson Mastiff in Antarctica where she was nearly killed. In the past, heart research was slow, treatments were not advanced, and the limited availability of hearts for a heart transplant made it even worse. Therefore, to overcome these barriers, she established Test Your Limits organization, which would raise funds for heart research. She believes in the physician-patient relationship, and her patients highly speak of her.
I have been doing crazy adventure things since I was a kid, and when I was able to do my first trip, I realized that it was a way for me to merge my passion for work and what I absolutely love to do every day with my passionate play. So for me, it was the natural fit imaginable, and to this day, I could never, would have believed it was possible to merge those two pieces together, as seamlessly as it has happened, so I’m not doing anything to myself other than truly enjoying my life.”
Specialization
Given her desire to save lives, it doesn’t come as a surprise that Dr. Ross specializes in the treatment of conditions that are deemed untreatable or patients that are told that they will not survive. She is also actively involved in the research of heart translation and preventive medicine. Currently, she is working with Apple Inc. to develop wearable technology to monitor and warn patients about their heart condition.

Almost Died During a Mountain Climb
Near-death experiences are always spooky to hear and make us appreciate the gift of life. To raise funds for Test Your Limit, she started traveling the world and pushing herself to the limit. In her very first climb in 2006 at Mount Vinson Massif, which has a peak of 16,067 feet, she came face to face with death. Although her team almost made it to the summit, they had to return by just getting a glimpse of the peak. On that evening, they descended and set up camp for the night. At 6 PM they started serving dinner; however, Dr. Ross was unable to keep anything in her stomach, and she started throwing up and became seriously ill, and her condition was deemed Climber’s Emergency. Her oxygen saturation dropped below forty and her lungs started filling up with fluids. Fortunately, one of her patients, Dale Shippam, a firefighter was with her, and he helped Dr. Ross climb down and back to safety. Following this event, she went on to climb Mera Peak in Nepal in 2008, went to the North Pole in 2010, and the South Pole in 2013. For her efforts, the Order of Canada was bestowed upon her in 2020, which is the highest honor for Canadian citizens.
Philanthropy
Dr. Heather Ross has always been big on charity and fundraisers. She established Test Your Limits, to raise both the awareness and funds for heart transplantation and research surrounding this field. So far, Test Your Limit has been able to raise over $2 Million, and it has made a significant difference in the treatment of heart diseases.

Dr. Harindra Wijeysundera
If I’m working on a project or idea that made me excited and find something that I was either expecting or not anticipating – those moments of working out a new method of doing something or finding a result that I didn’t expect and putting together a product that shows that process – those are certainly the most enjoyable parts of research for me. In an ideal world, I wish that was enough for me to be successful in research. That I would get paid and get an office and staff to just do things that I found really interesting. If the only thing that is important to a researcher is to produce papers, obtain grants, and do work that you don’t find all that interesting, I think that’s a bit of a shame.”
Dr. Harindra is among one of the most intelligent physicians in Canada. He is known for his precise assessment and the state of the art treatment. While many cardiologists focus on the treatment alone, Dr. Harindra is highly active in the research work, for which, he has also been honored with awards. Each new patient brings a new set of challenges and learning possibilities for Dr. Harinda, and he approaches every patient with compassion.
As ‘non-expert’, I am surprised by the amateur communications & lack of consistent messaging by experts in official & advisory roles with regards to vaccine safety & effectiveness. Building public trust is step 1. Should be mandatory to have formal media training in these roles.
— Harindra Wijeysundera (@hwijeysundera) May 9, 2021
Specialization
Dr. Harindra Wijeysundera is an interventional cardiologist. Although his clinical interests are limited to interventional cardiology, heart failure, and valve repairs, his research work is quite broad. He conducts trials, he has written several publications, and he is an active part of researches that focuses on both heart issues and other health problems.
I am not sure how one measures impact necessarily, and I am in the early part of my career so it’s probably not that easy to know the impact of my studies. I’ll probably only know that towards the middle or end of my career once I’ve had an opportunity to see longer-term results. I have worked on a number of projects that seemed to have garnered interest from both my peers and also from health policy groups. One of the first studies I worked on was really a very simple meta-analysis of previous studies that looked at therapies for patients who had failed the traditional ways of treating heart attacks. Somewhat surprisingly, that garnered a lot of attention that actually went into the updated American guidelines for heart attack care which probably was one of the reasons I continued on the research path. Typically, success makes you want to continue that way.”

The number of different sources of chest pain in a young person is different than they are in an old person. A child having chest pain is not the same as a middle-aged obese smoker having chest pain. One type of chest pain is coronary chest pain that’s caused by your heart not getting enough blood supply [and] oxygen because you’ve got coronary artery disease, and it’s one of the causes of chest pain that can be dangerous.”
