10 Best Cardiologists in Los Angeles

The number of individuals suffering from heart diseases continues to rise with each passing year. According to the 2018 report of NBC Los Angeles, 17% of all the deaths that occurred in Los Angeles county are caused by cardiovascular diseases. Experts state that the general cause of such cases is a sedentary lifestyle accompanied by a diet full of sugar, fats, and processed foods. However, in some cases even active people suffer a heart attack, therefore, it is always a good idea to see a specialist if one feels even the slight discomfort in breathing, experiences fainting spells, or dizziness without changing anything in their lives. Fortunately, Los Angeles houses some of the best cardiologists in the country.

Dr. Antreas Hindoyan

Antreas Hindoyan Profile

It’s a profession that is difficult, time-consuming and requires a great deal of patience but at the end of the day, it puts a smile on my face. If I had to choose now, I would do it all over again.”

Dr. Hindoyan is an amazing cardiologist that puts the care of patients and their experience over himself. Dr. Hindoyan decided to become a cardiologist because his grandfather had to visit a hospital countless times due to his heart condition, and seeing him suffering aspired Dr. Hindoyan to pursue this career. He started working in his family restaurant from eighth grade and continued working there until the second year of his medical school. Working in a fast-paced and stressful environment of a restaurant taught Dr. Hindoyan to never back away from hard work, and he claims this is one of the most crucial traits that one can possess. Additionally, he connects deeply with his patients, it is common for him to walk with patients to show them their way around in the hospital and he actively exchange his contact number with his patients.

Specialization

Dr. Hindoyan specializes in intervention cardiology, in which catheter-based techniques are used to treat heart diseases and defects. He also has a particular interest in coronary artery disease and structural heart disease. He opted for this approach because open-heart surgeries aren’t fit for aged people. Although he is an expert on cardiovascular diseases, he has also been a co-author of various publications regarding cancer prevention and stem cells.

Great cardiovascular care is attained by a strong patient-physician relationship and access to the most comprehensive and innovative treatments. My goal is to individualize a care plan for each patient that is designed to achieve the best outcomes. The cardiovascular system is a complex and integral organ system. The importance of maintaining its health is paramount to enjoying a rich and fulfilling lifestyle.”

Dr. Michael J. Wong

I was first trained to take care of heart attacks but in the 1990s three important things happened. Number one, there was a trial that showed that patients who have heart disease, by taking a cholesterol-lowering drug were able to reduce the current events by 30%. Number two, the heart association began to have lipid centers around the country that were educating physicians and I took one of their courses. The third thing that happened was that we were able to detect coronary disease without invading the body, i.e., with a heart scan and this allowed us to find out who had and who did not have coronary artery disease. As a result, I began to focus on preventing heart attacks and preventing second heart attacks.”

Dr. Wong is someone who can be called a complete doctor, as he possesses tremendous medical knowledge gained from years of experience and also has a genuine concern for his patients’ health. Additionally, he is known to tell people to avoid heart surgery, instead, he asks them to opt for medication. Moreover, he states that his goal is to educate physicians and healthcare professionals in reversing the causes that lead to a heart attack or a stroke, in addition to teaching the public practical ways to stay healthy.

Specialization

Dr. Wong is a cardiovascular disease cardiology specialist. He worked with the traditional techniques to fight against a heart attack until he came across lipidology, and he made it his mission to enable people to not have heart attacks in the first place. With over 50 years in this field, he possesses vital knowledge about the workings of the heart and its link to other organs. He has written publications on heart diseases that are a treasure for other physicians.

What makes my practice different is that I am board-certified in lipidology, we can devise specific programs beyond cholesterol that will help prevent cardiovascular disease. We use cutting-edge blood tests now that are more accurate than ever to detect who is at risk. We can reassure those who are at a low risk that they’re doing the right things and for those that are at high risk, we can devise specific individualized programs.”

He also opts for minimally invasive procedures such as Transcatheter Aortic Valve replacement in his practice and he has also written publications on it. Being the Associate Director of Clinical Research in Interventional Cardiology, he actively participates in the research work to develop new and efficient treatments for cardiovascular diseases.

So the problem that we have in aortic stenosis is that normally the aortic valve has three leaflets and these leaflets need to be thin, pliable, and really need to be opening and closing in a nice fashion with every heartbeat. Stenosis really means narrowing, overtime you get the accumulation of calcium nodules, thickening of these leaflets and really you get an impedance to flow and these leaflets will not open and close properly, and as a result of that blood is going to have a hard time getting out of the heart.”

Dr. Arash Bereliani

Arash Bereliani Profile

I emphasize to my patients that they should not get scared but, rather, get motivated to take care of themselves. The challenge as a physician is to know which tactic to use to make them understand and to motivate them the right way to take steps to take care of their heart health. Using the wrong technique could backfire and either cause more anxiety and fear, which (are) harmful or might not do anything to change their behavior.”

Dr. Arash is an excellent cardiologist and he has been in the medicinal field for over 15 years. He has comprehensive knowledge of scientifically-proven medicine and treatments for heart diseases. Despite being known for his attentiveness and care for his patients, he is also straightforward and unfolds the condition of his patients without sugar-coating it. Moreover, he explains all the detail of the treatment to his patients.

Dr. Bereliani is an expert when it comes to cardiovascular diseases. In addition to being a cardiologist, he frequently prescribes preventive medicine to his patients. Besides these, he provides health optimization, in this Dr. Arash works closely with his patients to create a logical and intuitive lifestyle structure for them by bringing in all the elements that go into well-being, i.e., sleep, exercise, and nutrition.

Supplements and vitamins play a major role in the prevention and treatment of heart disease and stroke; however, let me clarify a couple of points. These should not be taken in the place of medications in patients who have established heart diseases or who have had strokes before. It should be taken in conjunction with the medications; however, if you have somebody who’s healthy otherwise and has some risk factors to develop heart disease or stroke, supplements and vitamins can be useful in terms of preventing events.”

Dr. Anil K. Bhandari

Anil Bhandari profile

My father was a general practitioner back in India. He said in medicine if there’s one field where we can make the biggest difference is cardiology, so I knew as I was finishing my med school, it’s cardiology that I want to pursue. When I finished my cardiology training and was at the University of Rochester, New York, at the time our understanding of cardiac arrhythmia was relatively rudimentary and there was a lot of research going on and there were only, literally, 20 or 30 electrophysiologic in the country who were doing that. It grabbed my attention, you see San Fransico was one of the mecca for cardio electrophysiology, so I spent one year with them.”

With over 6,000 patients treated, Dr. Bhandari is an excellent cardiologist in Los Angeles, he has a passion and a great interest in the working of the heart, and this has allowed him to be exceptional in this field. The greatness of his skills can be understood by his medical statistics, as he has zero mortality in his practice, and he credits it all to the team effort. Dr. Bhandari is compassionate towards his patients and treats them with genuine care. He also states that during his professional career, he never went home before 8 p.m., but as time progressed he learned the importance of work-life balance, and now he enjoys his quality time with his family. He is also an avid golfer, but he also enjoys skiing and playing tennis. He has an interest in astrophysics as well.

Although the treatments and technology surrounding arrhythmia are constantly evolving, Dr. Bhandari keeps up to date with the latest trends in this field. He performs minimally invasive surgery and deals with cardiac electrical system procedures and adult congenital heart disease.

We learned to deal with all kinds of arrhythmias, and we began to cure them with radiofrequency ablation, that’s the time I left USC and came to Good Samaritan Hospital, and we were the only center in the city at the time. The feedback we got from our patients after we cured them is the best feedback any doctor can get.”

Dr. Vivian Mo

Vivian Mo Profile

During medical school and throughout my training, I was always taught that my job as a physician was to impart the best and most appropriate care to patients. I realized that even though health care was delivered during the one-to-one interaction between physician and patient, there were so many underlying factors that made that interaction possible. This fostered and piqued my interest in health care administration and reaffirmed my belief that improving health care would involve physicians being engaged with patients and the system.”

Dr. Vivian is another elite doctor that deals with cardiovascular diseases, she knows even the faintest sign of heart failure. She is quick to assess the situation and provide appropriate treatment. Compassion and mutual respect are top priorities of Dr. Vivian, and she treats patients from her heart. She is also a strong advocate against the discrimination that female heart patients receive. When she is not in her office, she enjoys gardening, and she has a huge garden in her backyard.

In many areas of cardiovascular disease, women are under-treated compared with men. They are less likely to receive statins for high cholesterol and less likely to receive anticoagulation or blood thinners for stroke prevention if they have atrial fibrillation, which is a common arrhythmia amongst our older population.”

Specialization

Dr. Vivian deals in preventive cardiology, echocardiography, and heart diseases in women. While she is a cardiologist, she also performs the duties of a radiologist. Given her expertise, it doesn’t come as a surprise that she is also appointed as a professor, and she quite enjoys educating aspiring physicians.

If you are having trouble with heart, don’t put it off anymore, because the longer you are at home, you might be languishing there. In some cases, I can’t help patients unless I physically see them. I’m very conservative and believe in keeping patients at home while we still have safer-at-home orders in effect, so if I ask you to come in, it’s not for anything else but you and your health.”

Dr. Joanne Chikwe

Joanne Chikwe

I knew I wanted to be a cardiac surgeon at about the age of 6 but I really fell in love with cardiac surgery the first time I saw an open heart operation as a medical student. The field has completely transformed in the last decade, we’ve moved from conventional open-chest approaches to much less invasive ways that allow people to get out of the hospital much faster and feel better quicker.”

Dr. Joanne Chikwe was born in England and pursued most of her medical studies there, but she traveled to New York for her fellowship, and ever since she has been practicing in the United States. Her passion grew to be a heart surgeon after watching documentaries about Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub who used to travel the world and perform life-saving heart surgeries in children. Although her skills are unparalleled as a doctor, she often says that doing what you love is what makes one excel in any field. As for her personality, she is an empath and loves healing patients with compassion. She is also quite fluent in Italian.

Specialization

Dr. Joanne Chikwe is an expert on cardiovascular diseases, she specializes in Mitral Valve Surgery and Valve Therapy. She has also written over 125 publications on these subjects, and she actively participates in the research work of cardiology and cardiac surgery. She has also treated famous personalities with heart conditions such as Arthur Hill, Patricia Reuter to name a few.

There’s something very special about repairing the mitral valve, repairing an aortic valve, or a tricuspid valve. Every single valve is different, it’s incredibly creative, and it’s very demanding, and most importantly it makes such a profound difference to patients. If you can repair it, repair it well rather than replace it.”
